Deaf Awareness & Communication

This Signature Level 1 Award in Deaf Awareness and Communication is designed to provide introductory knowledge and skill for enhancing communication with deaf people. It is recommended for all individuals in client-facing roles in the public and private sector. By the end of this ten-week course, successful learners will be able to define terms to describe deafness, deafblindness, deaf people and deafblind people; recognise appropriate language on the subject; give accurate statistics; list communication methods used; recognise barriers to communication; describe factors that affect communication; recognise discrimination; list technological aids; define the work of communication professionals; and list the national organisations and their activities. Students will have the opportunity to learn to do Manual Alphabet (fingerspelling), Deafblind Manual Alphabet and Block Alphabet. The cost of the assessment and certification is included in the course fee. Please note this course is not eligible for any concessionary rates.
